On August 6, my son Ethan turns nine.
Birthdays give us an opportunity to celebrate how much a child has grown, but they also invite us to slow down and recognize the person that child is becoming.
Ethan, you are still young, and there are many chapters of your life yet to be written. But even at nine years old, you have already given me countless reasons to be proud—not only because of what you can do, but because of the heart, character, curiosity, and determination you continue to show.

As you celebrate your ninth birthday, I want to share nine reasons I am proud of you and nine lessons I hope will guide you as you continue growing.
Nine Reasons I Am Proud of You
1. I Am Proud of Your Curiosity
You have a mind that wants to understand how things work.
You ask questions, explore ideas, and often want to go beyond the lesson in front of you. Your curiosity, especially when it comes to subjects such as mathematics and advanced learning, is one of your greatest strengths.
Never lose that desire to understand more. Curiosity will open doors that memorizing answers never can.
2. I Am Proud of How Much You Love Learning

Learning is not always easy, and school is not only about grades. It is also about developing patience, discipline, confidence, and the courage to keep trying.
I am proud of the enthusiasm you show when something captures your interest. I am proud of the way your mind comes alive when you are challenged.
Your ability is important, but your willingness to keep learning will take you even further.
3. I Am Proud of Your Resilience
There have been moments when school, friendships, expectations, or unfamiliar situations have felt difficult.
Still, you continue moving forward.
You have shown that progress does not always happen in a straight line. Sometimes it happens through small victories, difficult conversations, patient guidance, and the decision to try again the next day.
Your resilience is not measured by never struggling. It is measured by continuing to grow through the struggle.
4. I Am Proud of Your Big Heart

You care deeply, even when you do not always express it in ways that others immediately recognize.
There is tenderness in you. There is affection, sensitivity, humor, and concern for the people around you.
As you grow older, the world may sometimes encourage you to hide your emotions. I hope you never confuse kindness or sensitivity with weakness. A caring heart is a source of strength.
5. I Am Proud of Your Individuality
You are your own person.
You have your own interests, reactions, ideas, preferences, and way of looking at the world. You are not supposed to become a copy of anyone else—not even me.
I am proud when you show us who you are. Your individuality is something to understand, nurture, and celebrate.
6. I Am Proud of Your Imagination
Whether you are solving a problem, building something, playing, drawing, exploring technology, or creating stories in your mind, your imagination helps you see possibilities that may not be obvious to everyone else.
The ability to imagine something different is the beginning of invention, leadership, creativity, and meaningful change.
Keep building. Keep experimenting. Keep wondering what might be possible.
7. I Am Proud of the Progress You Have Made

Growth can sometimes be difficult to see while it is happening.
But I see it.
I see the ways you have developed academically, socially, and emotionally. I see the effort behind the milestones. I see the moments when you pause, listen, adjust, and make a better choice.
You do not have to be perfect for me to be proud of you. I am proud of the progress you make one step at a time.
8. I Am Proud of Your Energy and Enthusiasm

You bring energy into the spaces you enter.
Sometimes that energy is playful. Sometimes it is loud. Sometimes it is focused intensely on something you enjoy. And sometimes it reminds the adults around you that childhood should still contain movement, laughter, exploration, and fun.
I hope you learn how to direct that energy without ever losing the joy behind it.
9. I Am Proud That You Are My Son
Above everything else, I am proud simply because you are Ethan.
My pride in you is not dependent on grades, trophies, awards, achievements, or how well you meet other people’s expectations.
Nothing you accomplish will ever make you more worthy of love, because you were already worthy of love from the beginning.
Being your father is one of the greatest responsibilities and privileges of my life.

Nine Lessons I Hope You Will Carry With You
1. Always Be Kind, but Learn to Protect Your Boundaries
Kindness matters.
Treat people with compassion, respect, and fairness. Remember that everyone may be carrying struggles you cannot see.

But kindness does not mean allowing people to mistreat you. You can be caring while still saying no. You can forgive someone without continuing to accept harmful behavior.
A good heart also needs healthy boundaries.
2. Never Be Afraid to Ask for Help
There will be times when you do not know the answer, when something feels too difficult, or when your emotions become too heavy to carry alone.
Asking for help is not a sign that you are weak. It is a sign that you understand the importance of support, wisdom, and connection.
Talk to the people who love you. Speak honestly. Let others help you when you need it.
You never have to face everything alone.
3. Your Mistakes Do Not Define You
You will make mistakes. Everyone does.
What matters is whether you take responsibility, learn from what happened, make amends when needed, and choose to do better.
Do not waste your life trying to appear perfect. Focus instead on becoming honest, accountable, and willing to grow.
A mistake can become a lesson when you have the courage to face it.
4. Do Not Let Other People Decide Your Worth
Not everyone will understand you.
Some people may underestimate you, compare you with others, criticize you, or try to define you according to one moment, one result, or one weakness.
Listen to helpful feedback, but do not build your identity around someone else’s opinion.
Your worth is not something other people get to vote on.
5. Work Hard, but Remember That Life Is More Than Achievement
I hope you pursue excellence. I hope you develop discipline, set meaningful goals, and discover what you are capable of accomplishing.
But I also hope you remember that your life cannot be measured only by productivity or success.
Make time for family. Build real friendships. Rest when you need to. Laugh often. Enjoy the ordinary moments.

Achievement is part of life. It should never become the whole of it.
6. Stay Curious and Keep Asking Questions
Do not accept something as true simply because everyone else believes it.
Learn to examine ideas, gather facts, listen to different perspectives, and think for yourself.
Ask why. Ask how. Ask whether there might be another way.
Some of the most important discoveries begin with a person who is brave enough to ask a better question.
7. Choose Friends Who Respect Who You Are
Friendships can shape the direction of your life.
Surround yourself with people who encourage you to be honest, kind, responsible, and confident. Be careful around people who pressure you to betray your values or make you feel that you must become someone else to belong.
And remember to be the kind of friend you hope to find.
8. Your Feelings Matter, but They Do Not Have to Control Every Decision
You will experience happiness, disappointment, anger, fear, excitement, sadness, and frustration.
Every feeling has something to teach you, and none of them should make you ashamed.
Learn to name what you feel. Talk about it. Understand where it is coming from. Then give yourself time to decide how you want to respond.
You are allowed to feel deeply while still choosing wisely.
9. Always Know That You Are Loved
There may be moments in life when you feel misunderstood, discouraged, uncertain, or far away from home.
In those moments, remember this: you are loved.
You do not have to earn that love by being the smartest, strongest, most successful, or easiest person in the room.
My love for you is not a reward for good performance. It is part of the foundation beneath you.
Wherever life takes you, I hope that truth always gives you somewhere safe to stand.
Happy 9th Birthday, Ethan
Ethan, as you begin another year of your life, I hope you continue discovering more about the world and about yourself.

I hope you remain curious without becoming afraid to admit what you do not know. I hope you become confident without losing humility. I hope you become strong without losing tenderness. I hope you pursue your dreams without forgetting the people who love you.
There will be victories ahead, but there will also be challenges. Through all of them, I will continue believing in you, supporting you, guiding you, and learning alongside you.
You have already grown so much, and I know your story is only beginning.
Happy ninth birthday, my sunshine!
I am proud of who you are today, and I am excited to see the person you will become.
With all my love,
Dad
